Anesthesia and Monitoring

Prior to any surgical procedure a pre-surgical exam will be conducted to check your pet's heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, hydration and color. Blood work is performed to ensure your pet's organs are functioning properly. The results of your pet's blood tests, along with their breed, age, any pre-existing conditions and previous anesthesia history, are taken into consideration when creating your pet's anesthesia protocol.

Maintaining proper anesthesia levels and monitoring your pet's vitals during surgery is our top priority. An IV catheter is placed and IV fluids are delivered to your pet to help support organ function and maintain blood pressure during the surgical procedure. While under anesthesia your pet is connected to an anesthesia monitor and our trained technicians monitor and record your pet's vital every ten minutes.

At Shaker Heights Animal Hospital, we use Sevoflurane as our inhalant gas anesthesia. The benefit of Sevoflurane over other gas anesthetics is that it allows our veterinarians and technicians to quickly adjust your pet's level of anesthesia, giving us better control and maximizing safety. It also allows your pet to wake up quicker after the surgical procedure is completed.

Shaker Heights Animal HospitalPain Management

We do not want your pet to be in pain any more than you do. At Shaker Heights Animal Hospital, we incorporate a pain management plan into all our surgical procedures. We administer pain medications, including opioids and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) before, during and after any surgical procedure to minimize the pain your pet may experience.

Postoperative Care

When it is time for your pet to go home, you will be provided with "to go home instructions," which one of our technicians will thoroughly go over with you. If you have any questions or concerns about your pet at the time of discharge, we will be more than happy to answer them.
